Ooty, the 'Queen of Hills', is probably one of the most visited hill stations in India. There is an undying charm to this place in the Nilgiri Hills that still enchants travellers. With its pleasant weather, rolling hills, and acres of tea plantations, Ooty always beckons travellers to come back for more. We have a list of experiences that you should not miss when here.
Ooty Lake – Get the full tourist experience in the heart of Ooty, at Ooty Lake. Take a pedal boat across the lake and revel in the passing scenery of eucalyptus forests and winding roads. You can also enjoy a horse ride around the lake and munch on some hot corn-on-the-cob.
Avalanche Lake – For a more serene lake experience, visit the lovely Avalanche Lake, located about 30km from Ooty. The expansive lake, surrounded by rolling hills, is perfect for a picnic; what's more, you can even fish here. All you need is a fishing license from the Fishery Department located near the Ooty Bus Stand.
Hang Gliding - This will give adventure seekers a big rush. Hang gliding is undertaken only during the clear weather months, from March to May, by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department. Most hotels in Ooty will be able to guide you for this activity.
Trekking to Doddabetta - Doddabetta Peak is the highest peak in the region, providing a fantastic trek which can even be undertaken by beginners. The trek route through eucalyptus forests, beautiful meadows, shola forests and tiny ponds makes it a complete visual treat for trekkers.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway - A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built by the British in 1908. This unique little toy train runs 26kms, around 208 curves, through 16 tunnels, and across 250 bridges. Add to that the mountain scenery and the picturesque towns dotting the journey; you couldn't spend 4 hours in a better way in Ooty.
